My life as a student…so far

Good morning fellow bloggers!

For those of you who have read some of my other posts, you will know that I am a student currently on a year out work placement. How did I get here?

To be honest I struggled to get here, but I fought my way through and am more determined than ever to get to the top.

My more life changing decisions began when I was in sixth form (I have already written a post about this so I’ll keep it brief). I had to complete two years of study before I could pick my profession for university. In my first year I had chosen Maths, Economics, Government and Politics, and Art & Design. Sounds impressive, but due to health issues I missed almost half a year of study which dramatically affected my grades. In fact, I was close to not being let back in to continue my second year. After fighting my corner, I ended up studying Art & Design, Economics and Film Studies (2 years of work in 1 year). My final year was probably one of the toughest experiences I have faced in life so far (all 21 years of it). Having to come back to what I saw was a place of anxiety and put all my energy into my work without dwelling on the past (a lot of past) is something I wouldn’t wish upon anyone.

Anyway we won’t talk about the grades I received (highly embarrassing), but we will talk about how I resolved what seemed like the end of the world (not getting my desired university place). After going through a such rigorous selection process to secure a potential position at UCL Bartlett School of Architecture only to have it torn away from me, I found myself in a dark ditch I thought I could never dig my way out of. What was I to do? Where do I turn?

Well, there’s always another option which is something I think we all need to remember in life no matter what stage we are at. For me, the best option was to go through clearing…in turn turned out to be the best decision I’ve made so far.

Where am I today?

Today, I sit at a desk with an amazing support system surrounding me. This being my family, work colleagues, friends and tutors. I have gone on a few journeys from a young age, this one has been the most educational and life changing one. I felt like I just floated around and got by in my first a second year at university simply trying my best and learning as much as I could having never studied the subject before.

But what has really made me who I am? The answer is this placement. By putting in 7 months of time and effort to secure it I believe I’ve landed firmly on my feet and they’re not moving anywhere. Not only have I matured as a person, but my skills have grown exponentially, more than I could have imagined before starting here!

They say that taking a placement year is the best thing you can do for yourself and your university studies…I can confirm, they’re right!

I cannot wait to start my third year and put my new skills to the test, I’ll be blogging my journeys all the way through so stick with me because we can do this!

Moral: If at first you fail, try and try again, you can do it, I believe in you!
